This Weekend in the 614: Oct 30-Nov 1

Punk and jam bands on Campus, a free jazz guitar night in Granville, costumed cover sets in Grandview on Halloween and a Sunday gospel show. Status: This weekend.

With Halloween on a Saturday, the whole weekend tilts toward costumes, and clocks fall back an hour early Sunday morning, which buys one more hour of sleep after the parties. Six picks for Friday, October 30, through Sunday, November 1, all from our events calendar:

  • The Damned - Friday at 8 p.m., the British punk originals play the old Campus theater, and the Flamin Groovies and The Courettes open, a fitting bill for Halloween eve.
  • Stanley Jordan at the Denison Jazz Guitar Festival - Friday at 8 p.m. in Granville, the touch technique guitarist headlines Denison's 30th annual festival inside the Eisner Center's Sharon Martin Hall. The concert is free but needs a ticket, and his free 3 p.m. masterclass welcomes players who bring a guitar.
  • Fortress Fright Night - Saturday evening, three hours starting at 6, at Fortress Obetz, the village's own Halloween night at its sports and events complex, an easy stop for families south of the city.
  • Halloween Hootenanny - Saturday from 8 p.m., both stages fill with local acts in costume: Angela Perley as Tom Petty, Magnolia as Alabama Shakes, Lydia Loveless and friends as the Misfits, and Cousin Simple as Weezer. One ticket covers both rooms.
  • Hookahween with Ekoostik Hookah - Saturday back at Newport, doors at 7 and music at 8, the hometown jam band's Halloween party with Brahctopus, open to all ages.
  • Rika Fanning in the Gospel Soul Series - Sunday at 6 p.m. at Natalie's Grandview, the Columbus bassist and singer leads her band in the monthly series that Debra James Tucker hosts.

Saturday is also the busiest night on the road. Columbus and most suburbs hand out candy tonight, Thursday, but two cities wait for Halloween itself, so expect kids on the sidewalks of Worthington and Grandview Heights until 8 on Saturday, right before the late shows start. Grandview diners heading to Natalie's should allow for that on Grandview Avenue.

The same day brings last call at the Hoster taproom, and the Halloween night schedule lists each city's hours. For a scare with a ticket, our Best Haunted Houses list is in its final weekend, and the Campus page has late food near Newport.
