Columbus City Council will hold a public hearing on the future of the Franklin County Municipal Courthouse on Monday, November 9, at 1 p.m. The council notice, filed Thursday, October 29, says Council President Shannon Hardin will lead it as head of Rules and Policy, joined by Council Member Emmanuel Remy.

The agenda covers money and buildings. According to the notice, members will review the city's past and proposed capital budget for the court, revisit the shelved idea of a brand new court building, and look at proposals to renovate the space the court uses now. Staff from the city's Department of Finance and Management will present. The notice gives no dollar figures, no construction schedule and no sign of a vote that day, so treat this as a briefing with public comment, not a decision.

The hearing will sit inside the building it is about: the first floor traffic courtroom at 375 S. High St., the Downtown court tower that handles traffic tickets, misdemeanors, evictions and small claims for the city and much of the county. Thousands of residents pass through it for court dates, which is why a renovation plan matters well beyond City Hall.

Residents can take part two ways. Anyone who wants to testify in the room must email Jessica Clinger in Hardin's office, jnclinger@columbus.gov, before 10 that morning, and remarks are capped at three minutes per person. Written comments go to that same inbox under that same cutoff; label the subject line as written testimony for the 11/9 courthouse hearing. CTV will carry the session live, and it will also stream on YouTube and Facebook. For a disability accommodation, call 614-645-8871, the city's ADA line, three or more business days in advance.

Budget talk continues the next evening. A second notice says Finance and Government Committee leader Nick Bankston will run a Capital Improvement Budget hearing on Tuesday, November 10, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. about where city finances stand. For a meal near the courthouse, see our Downtown page, and read recent votes such as the Plant Based Treaty resolution and the rest of our City coverage.
