Best Specialty and Local Grocery Stores in Columbus, Ohio
We ranked five independent and family-run grocery stores in Columbus ahead of Thanksgiving, reading each store's own website on October 30 and 31 for departments, history, hours and holiday ordering. A store qualifies when it sells a full range of groceries beyond one specialty and posts current information online. The ranking rewards depth behind the counter, meaning a butcher, fish case or bakery run in house, then holiday preorders and hours that make a big shopping week easier. Where a store lists turkey prices or order deadlines, we report them. We did not shop these stores or sample their food for this update.
Weiland's Market on Indianola Avenue in Clintonville began in 1961 when John Williams and George Weiland opened a meat shop, and it moved into its current store at 3600 Indianola in 1999. In April 2024 the business passed to two longtime managers, Daniel Phillips and Andy Russell, after growing from 4,500 square feet and 17 employees to just under 19,000 square feet and 90 employees. The meat department still builds cookout boxes and bundles to order. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
