Our newest food ranking is for anyone who plans a Saturday around a pastry case. Best Bakeries in Columbus, Ohio is live with seven shops, and each had to bake in its own kitchen, sell over the counter and post up-to-date hours online to make the cut.

Best Overall is Pistacia Vera on South Third Street in German Village, where pastry chef and co-owner Spencer Budros runs a case of macarons, eclairs and six kinds of croissant, rye and French onion among them. A box of twelve macarons is the easy dinner party gift, and the doors open at 7 on weekday mornings, an hour later on Saturday and Sunday.

The rest of the list spreads out across town. Fox in the Snow's original mason garage room in Italian Village is No. 2 for its huge cinnamon rolls and pecan-crusted sticky buns, and Dan the Baker on Ridge Street is the bread pick, with a toast bar Wednesday through Sunday and panettone for the holidays. Pattycake Bakery in Clintonville, vegan since 2003 and worker-owned since 2013, holds the fourth spot. Resch's, open since 1912, made the list from its newer Hamilton Road shop in Gahanna, and Kittie's Cakes in Old Worthington and Schneider's, a 6 a.m. donut counter in Uptown Westerville, finish it.

One familiar name is missing on purpose. Mozart's in Clintonville is retiring after December 24, as we reported in our story on the closing, so we left it off a list meant to last. Dan the Baker has already opened its Thanksgiving preorder, so holiday bread planners can get in line now.

Readers who skip dairy and eggs should also see our new vegan and vegetarian guide, and the German Village page has coffee and lunch near the top pick.
