Grove City Opens Pumpkin Drop-Off at Fryer Park Nov. 1

Residents can leave undecorated jack-o'-lanterns in a marked dumpster through Dec. 1, and a November food drive collects for veterans and their pets. Status: Starts Nov. 1.

Grove City has a place for your jack-o'-lantern once the candle burns out. Starting Sunday, November 1, the city will collect pumpkins and gourds at Fryer Park for composting, according to a parks notice updated on Wednesday, October 28. The drop-off stays open through Tuesday, December 1.

The bin is a marked dumpster in the parking lot next to the community garden at Fryer Park, 3899 Orders Road. Strip off candles, feathers, felt and paper before you toss anything in. Pumpkins covered in paint, glitter or sealant are not accepted because they cannot be composted and can be toxic to animals. If the dumpster is full, the city asks people to take their pumpkins home instead of leaving them on the ground, and households with a large pile should arrange their own disposal. The heavy gourds are also not allowed in the compost bins behind the Brookpark facility.

The city suggests another route that costs nothing: break the pumpkin into pieces and let it rot under the leaves in your own yard, where squirrels and birds will finish it. Questions go to Nancy Gosztyla, the city's environmental recreation supervisor, at 614-277-3058.

The same day, Grove City starts a month-long canned food drive for M.A.S.H. Pantry and Resource Center, a Grove City nonprofit founded in 2012 that serves veterans, military families and survivors. Collection boxes for canned goods, nonperishables and pet food will sit at the Grove City Library at 3959 Broadway, Kingston Center at 3226 Kingston Ave., City Hall at 4035 Harrisburg Pike and the Visit Grove City office at 4060 Broadway through November 30.
