Five cafes ranked for the cup itself, the toppings, price and evening hours, with Chocolate Cafe on Northwest Boulevard at No. 1. Status: Live on site.

Daylight saving time ends this Sunday, November 1, and the sun will set before 5:30 by mid-month, so we ranked the cups worth leaving the house for. Our hot chocolate ranking went up on Thursday, with five cafes that list hot chocolate or cocoa on their own current menus.

Best Overall goes to Chocolate Cafe at 1855 Northwest Blvd., where Lisa Boyle has run a dessert room built around chocolate since 2007. It is the late-night pick on the list, closing at 9 from Sunday through Thursday and an hour later on Friday and Saturday. Adults can order a spiked version, and party hosts can carry out a carafe that fills ten to twelve cups for $50.

The other four each win on something different. Pistacia Vera in German Village makes its cocoa with Valrhona chocolate for $6.50, best taken with a croissant before the 3 p.m. close. Fox in the Snow is the bargain at $4.75 and has seven cafes, including spots near both suburban rinks. Northstar Cafe makes a $7 spiced cup from organic milk and dark chocolate and serves it until 10:30 at night at its Short North location. Kittie's Cakes in Old Worthington finishes its mug with marshmallows made in its own kitchen.

Pair a cup with skating: Dublin and New Albany open outdoor rinks on November 21 and 22, all listed on our rinks ranking. Our Grandview page has dinner spots near the top pick.
